Sasha Waltz & Guests
December 12, 2021: Live and Livestreamed!
6pm Berlin / 12 Noon ET / 9am PT
A DYNAMIC PERFORMANCE TO TERRY RILEY’S
CLASSIC MINIMALIST MASTERWORK
In 1964, Terry Riley kicked off a revolution with his landmark piece, In C. In 2001, Bang on a Can released a recording of their interpretation of the minimalist classic with a singular combination of amplified instruments from around the globe, propelling Riley’s transcendental masterpiece into the future.
On December 10-12, 2021, the Berlin-based dance company Sasha Waltz & Guests offers a live in-person concert of In C in Berlin at radial system with a live performance by our own Bang on a Can All-Stars in their first international tour in nearly two years. The December 12 performance will be livestreamed here on live.bangonacan.org!
Sasha Waltz and her dancers have developed choreographic material that follows a variable structure similar to the music, and is deliberately designed not to be a finished stage piece. Waltz explains her vision for the project:
“The score of In C consists of fifty-three musical phrases and reads like stage directions for musicians. The thought of translating these detailed instructions into dance through a choreographic exploration of the music appealed to me. The result is an experimental system of fifty-three movement phrases for a structured improvisation with clear rules and laws. The length of the piece remains variable, as does the number of musicians and dancers.”

This performance is a continuation of Bang on a Can’s online offerings during the pandemic. On our five six-hour live online Marathons so far in 2020 (May 3, June 14, August 16, October 18, and November 15), Bang on a Can has presented over 90 performances including 31 new commissions and more than 130 composers and performers. The Marathons feature conversations with the composers in between each performance, offering insights into their music, work, and life during this time.
