James Sellars (1940-2017) was an imaginative and original composer, an outspoken commentator on music and art, and a demanding but inspiring teacher of hundreds of students. His music is an interesting balance of reverence for and mastery of historical musical forms and techniques, such as sonata form and counterpoint, and modern musical techniques and language. His works often have a sense of sweetness to them and an ample dose of wit and imagination. Many works have strong theatrical elements. His music is eclectic and original, labeled by some as post-modern.
